CD Replication and DVD Replication Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some CD replication and DVD replication questions and answers that we hope you find useful. If you have a question that isn't answered here please contact our replication team at tmc media.

I’ve never had a CD or DVD replicated, can you help?
The people at TMC Media have over 15 years of experience in CD and DVD replication and there are very few questions we haven’t been asked over the years! If this is your first project we will be there to guide you through the process and provide both advice and practical help to make sure everything runs smoothly from start to finish.

What is the minimum order size?
For CD and DVD replication, the minimum order size for a new title is 500 units, but it is worth noting that economies of scale mean that there is little difference between the total cost of 500 and 1,000 units.
For CD-R and DVD-R duplication, the minimum order level is 50 units

How long will CD production or DVD production take?
Typically, delivery of the finished product will be between 7-10 working days after we receive all the production elements. If you have a specific delivery date that you need to meet, please call us as we are usually able to meet tight deadlines.

What do we need to supply for the CD production or DVD production to take place?
We will require the content you require replicated which in the case of a CD is required on a CD-R and for a DVD in the form of a DVD-R or a DLT tape. We will also require artwork files for printing the disc and any packaging required. These should be set-up in the relevant template (which we will supply) and supplied as a high-resolution PDF file. Finally we will require a delivery address which is able to accept deliveries during business hours.

What CD and DVD packaging options are available?
This depends on a number of factors including your budget, the amount of printed information you wish to include with the disc, the material you want to use through to whether you require eco-friendly packaging. We will be happy to advise on the best format to use depending on your requirements.

How much information will fit on a CD?
A 12cm replicated CD has a capacity of 74 minutes of audio content or 650mb of data. An 8cm replicated CD has a capacity of 24 minutes of audio content or 210mb of data.

How much information will fit on a DVD?
A replicated DVD5 disc has a capacity of 4.7GB of data. The DVD9 format can accommodate 8.5GB and the DVD10 has a capacity of 9.4GB of data. An 8cm replicated DVD has a capacity of 1.4GB of data.

How will my CD orders or DVD orders be delivered?
All deliveries will be made by secure overnight courier or in the case of larger quantities by recognised overnight pallet delivery companies. You will be advised in advance of the date of delivery and we ask that you arrange for somebody to be present on that date to accept the delivery.

Can you distribute my CDs and/or DVDs to more than one delivery point?
Our distribution model has been proven to offer an efficient a cost-effective solution to multi-site deliveries on many occasions. Whether you require distribution to hundreds of retail outlets or thousands of private addresses, we have a system that will suit.

Can I have environmentally friendly packaging for CDs and DVDs?
Yes! We are able to offer a range of card based packaging for both CD and DVD distribution which is either recycled or has been sourced from FSC or BBB audited facilities. If you let us know what you are aiming to achieve we will provide you with a range of options.

Do I need any licences or other approvals?
If you are planning to include any material that is copyrighted by a third party, you must obtain their permission before production starts. In the case of music this is normally controlled by the MCPS organisation and we can help you through the licensing process. There is no single organisation that controls software and film content so permission will need to be sought from the individual companies that own the material.

How do I pay for my CD orders or DVD orders?
We operate a policy whereby the first order that you place with us requires payment in advance. This can be in the form of a cheque or by BACS transfer. If you wish to apply for credit terms please contact us for a credit account application form.
